I don't even know how to start this review, I can't, I just can't. I don't know how Victoria Aveyard did it but she almost succeeded in making me cry, in public, more than just once! (FYI: I rarely cry when it comes to books) The first thought I had when I finished Red Queen was: I want to curl up in a ball and cry! I could barely read the last 5 chapters because of the tears in my eyes (which is super rare for me)!
Right from the first few pages I was sucked into the story, hallucinating vividly because the writing style is just so captivating and beautiful. I could imagine everything she described so well it was almost scary, it felt like I was actually there in the story and going through it myself.
Tying in with her amazing writing style is her world-building! When it comes to world-building, most of the time I don't really pay a lot of attention to it because it doesn't really stand out to me. I just read over them without really taking it in, this most of the time end up with me imagining stuff that isn't really there in the story which can get quite confusing for me. But the truth is that it's my own fault of not paying to much attention to it. However, when reading Red Queen the world-building really struck me in the best way possible. Everything came to life from the pages and I could see everything so clearly! This made reading Red Queen so much more enjoyable for me. The world-building was so beautifully done, it was like I was actually there!
Now let's talk about the characters, there were a lot of them! All very important to the story in my opinion and everyone was so defined and had depth to them which I really liked! Especially the main crew, Oh My God! I swooned over the main males and Mare was pure perfection for me! The friendship between Mare and Kilorn was spot on, and it felt so real to me! When a friendship between a boy and a girl is forced or is only there because the author wants it there, I know this from the moment the friendship is introduced. This is because I have a male best friend and he truly is one of my best friends and the way we interact is unique to our friendship. But enough about that, what I'm trying to say is that the friendship between Mare and Kilorn feels legit because of the way they interact with each other, they fool around and talk to one another like me and my friend do. And this is the reason it feels so real to me.
Coming back to our main female protagonist Mare, I love her, I seriously love her so much! I haven't felt so attached to a character the way I did in a while and I could connect with her on so many levels! It felt like she was me, or I was her or however you want to say it, but she is the kind of character that I love so much and she felt so real to me because of her struggles and development. Me loving Mare so damn much ended up in a funny way halfway through the story because something happened that has never happened to me before. And this is that halfway through the story, when I was super in love with Mare, that I literately shipped her with every possible male character in the story. It didn't matter to me with whom she would end up because she was so perfect to me and all the male characters were suitable for her, at least in that moment in my opinion.
Now you've taken everything in that I had to say about Red Queen it's time to rate this beauty. For me the story had a solid plot, amazing characters, a wonderful world (ahum, maybe a bit twisted, but still) which was so interesting, and nothing was predictable for me. Every time I thought I knew what would happen next, something completely opposite happened and this kept everything fast past and interesting! Red Queen wasn't the best book I've read but I will treasure this beauty forever! And now comes the dreadful part of having to wait a whole year for the sequel!
Final verdict: 4.5 out of 5
