I am a Stephen King fan, so excuse me for my lack of objectivity. But even if I weren't a Stephen King fan, I would definitely become a Stephen King fan once I read The Shining.
Most people know the movie, featuring a magnificent Jack Nicholson. But the book is even better than the movie, even though you can't help but imagine mister Nicholson as the main character. That says a lot about the movie casting and his performance.
But I'm not here to brag about Jack Nicholson. I'm here to convince you all to read this book. It's brilliant. The way King writes! You are being pulled into the story from page one. The description of the characters, the rooms, the hedge animals, ... it gives you the chance to lose yourself in your own imagination and sit there biting your nails while the plot thickens. You experience empathy, as well as fear. Sometimes you laugh and sometimes you nearly cry. Kings way of taking you by the hand and letting you wander through the hotel corridors on your own, is worth an applause.
Spoiler? The famous sentence "Here's Johnny" is nowhere to be found in the book. I guess Jack Nicholson came up with that one.
