This book picks up right where ‘Hyperion’ ended and immediately continues on a high adrenaline rollercoaster ride. As different threads of the storyline are interwoven the mysteries and questions raised in ‘Hyperion’ are slowly resolved in a setup that is more linear in fashion than it was in ‘Hyperion’. The story only spans several days, but what a rush it is, jumping from cliffhanger to cliffhanger, keeping a constant level of high tension throughout. The scope of the stakes and forces at play is dizzying and the consequences terrifying … and all of this on a backdrop of a universe of vast imaginativeness spanning both reality and the AI datasphere, present and future. Occasionally the required imagination is stretched to the max when certain aspects could have been elaborated upon a little bit more, such as the history of the Ousters or the essence of the human and AI Ultimate Intelligences. However, these are just details and do not alter the fact that this is an accessible and thoroughly enjoyable novel.
‘The Fall of Hyperion’ is a very original, imaginative and fast paced novel that offers a very rewarding read! The story continues with ‘Endymion’.
